Launch of new Waste Less, Save More project, with three hours of fun and learning for all the family.
The event starts at noon, at the Nunsmoor Centre car park, and will feature a demonstration showing how to make the best of food that might be heading for your waste bin, and lots of information to take away.
There will be plenty of tasty food to try and ‘balance bikes’ from Bike4Health, for children who want to learn how to ride a cycle. A smoothie-making bike will let children use pedal power to turn fruit into juice drinks. Organisers will also be looking for households willing to take part in a ‘food waste challenge’.
The Waste Less, Save More project is designed to create awareness about food waste as a local and global problem and to reduce food waste in households and schools in Newcastle’s Wingrove ward. The project will appoint ‘Food Saver Champions’ who will receive training and create food saving materials to be distributed. A Fab Foods programme will work with local schools, and audits on food waste will be carried out to create reports and action plans. There will also be a Waste Awareness Week where talks, workshops and demonstrations will be held.
The project is a collaboration between Greening Wingrove and supermarket giant Sainsbury’s, which has donated £20k.
