Summer Cycling At The Bike Garden
Nuns Moor Park Bike Garden will be living up to its name this summer, with biking activities, workshops and guided rides for all ages.
In fact the fun doesn’t stop until the end of October, and each week there will be something to do.
Every Wednesday the Bike Garden opens its gates at seven in the morning, yes 7am, and they stay open until seven in the evening. It is an opportunity for local residents to bring in their bikes for a thorough check and get minor adjustments made, all for free!
The Wednesday bike workshop is run by Bike4Health, a North East community interest company which has teamed up with Greening Wingrove CIC to make cycling easier, more fun and more affordable for local people.
Residents are able to drop off their bikes before they go to work and pick them up later after they’ve finished. They are also free to drop them in at any time during the day. All checks are carried out by a qualified Bike4Health mechanic, and would typically set you back more than £20 at commercial premises. Depending on workload, a mechanic may be able to carry out repairs, but there is normally a charge.
Bike4Health is also running a number of Sunday sessions, which start from the Bike Garden. Sunday 6 August is one to mark in your diary.
There will be two free guided family bike rides to Exhibition Park, one starting at 10am and the other at 12.30pm. For places on these rides, you need to book online. There will be a free guided ride down the River Tyne towards the coast, suitable for the ‘confident cyclist’, setting off at 10am. The bike workshop will also be open from 10am to 2pm, so you can get that cycle in for a good free check up, if you weren’t able to make it during the week.
Further events are planned for 27 August, 17 September, 1 October, 15 October and there is a special Halloween night bike ride on 31 October.
Look out too for a brand new café, opening in the Bike Garden on Wednesdays.
Also check out the 2pm Wednesday Time Exchange Wildlings Kids’ Club which will be running each week throughout August – a chance for children of all ages to connect with nature and get creative in an outdoor environment. No advance booking is needed. Just turn up on the day.
