Arthur’s Odyssey – Premiere Performance

Event Details

Arthur’s Odyssey – an epic circus adventure. Advance booking essential.

This is the premiere performance of a brand new piece of circus theatre, which focuses on the life of Arthur Fenwick, a member of one of Newcastle’s most well-known families, and a name familiar to most Geordies because of the world-famous, annual Fenwick’s Christmas shop window displays.

A little-known fact however, is that the Fenwick name became an iconic one in North East circus history, after Arthur ran away with the circus for six years, before returning to run the family department store.

Arthur’s Odyssey is based loosely based on Homer’s Odyssey and draws on research into Arthur Fenwick’s life. It weaves the two stories, merging them with spectacular circus skills, puppetry, physical theatre and theatrical storytelling.

Seats for this performance must be booked in advance. Email, stating you are booking tickets for Arthur’s Odyssey. There is no fixed price and organisers have asked instead that people donate what they can afford at the entrance on the day.

This first-ever public performance will take place in a 270-seat black and white big top tent, called ‘The Magpie’. The big top will be an eye-catching feature for four days of Circus In The Park from 1-4 June.

The show is produced in association with Circus Central (“the home of circus in the North East”), directed by Robyn Hambrook, choreographed by circus specialist Claire Harvey, with production design and costumes by Emma Brierley. It is performed by emerging circus and dance artists, many of whom have been learning their craft on BTEC courses run by Circus Central. It is sponsored by Arts Council England and supported by Greening Wingrove.
